11月27日 Food, Glorious and Yummy FoodWas watching Channel 5's "Our Makan Place Lost and Found 3" and some of the local hawker food that were showing looks so mouth watering. Kekeke. Will love to try ALL of them
My favourite local hawker food so far are BBQ stingray, mutton soup (Indian and Chinese style, I think Malay also have?), tom yum, roti prata, chicken rice, 肉骨茶, 窝咑, most kinds of 粥, 咖喱/亚参鱼头, 蚝煎, 药材鸡, 牛肉粉、粿条, 粽子, 咖喱卜, 炒福建虾面, 炒粿条, 河粉, 油条, 沙爹. I'm rather health conscious since being a Virgo so do try and curl eating some of the more "bad" kind of food and watch my weight. Have to cooonnntroooolll...
Speaking of food recommendations, I had a lot of fun back when I was in Melbourne trying various new restaurants and eateries armed with my Cheap Food Guide. The guide for the Asian food section was a rather hit or miss affair for me. Probably because I have higher expectations than the Aussie reviewers. kekeke. Although, I was in a western country for many years but my taste buds are still very Asian and there are surprisingly many Asian food stores spread across Melbourne. To name a few memorable ones that I patronised are :
Ying Thai 2 in Carlton. A very authentic, affordable and friendly Thai restaurant that still serve one of, if not, the best tom yum soup ever. They also have a clear soup (can't remember the name now) that is way more spicy than their famous Tom Yum soup. The chefs don't pull any punches when it comes to spice and chilli so if you can't take spicy food up to the level of Thai standards, better inform them during order. This is a 5 stars restaurant quality food at an affordable and relaxed setting. A clear 5/5
Wah Kee in Clayton town serves a yummy and filling rice dish called Mun Fun. It's basically Hor Fun's ingredients on rice. I probably had this dish for about 100 times since at one stage I was living in or nearby Clayton for a few years. Now, I just walk in and ask for the usual and they know that I want Mun Fun with their home made special sambal paste and sometimes green chilli. kekeke. They also serve very nice nonya bean curb.
There is a HK eatery in Melbourne Chinatown in Mid City complex that sells 车仔面, rice and hk drinks. I can't remember the name though; it's a short walk into the walk way near the corner of Little Bourke St and Russell St. It's always packed so shouldn't be hard to find. Quite unique in Melbourne as I think it's the only eatery selling 车仔面.
e c pot cafe bar has done something special with the boneless Hainanese chicken on rice. Theirs the clay pot version and it's worth the 20~30min wait for it. The chicken is tender, succulent and smooth. The clay pot Hainanese style rice is aromatic and not oily. I love it that towards finishing the rice can start digging and munching the crispy 锅粑.Highly recommended dish. Just remember to bring a mouth freshener with you as the chilli, ginger, garlic and spice are "aromatic" but in a good way, hehehe. I like the dish so much that I didn't get around trying others on the menu.
Taipei Delight is a small homely restaurant in Glen Waverley that sells home made authentic Taiwanese food and bakery. Recommended food is spicy beef noodle, seaweed and 肉躁饭/面.
There is a very nice small homely authentic Japanese restaurant run and own by Japanese in one of the allies in between Bourke Street Mall and Little Collins St, if I remembered correctly. It closes rather early as it caters more for the lunch crowd from people working in the offices. The rice dishes and bentos are very nice.
I was living within 5 minutes walk to an authentic Korean restaurant called "Kim Chi" located in Carnegie. They have a few restaurents in other parts of Melbourne but this is the original one run by the Koreans. Food is very yummy, the servings are big and they're generous with the side cold dishes. Don't worry even if it states that the dish is spicy as they're in reference to Korean/Aussie standard It's generally very packed during weekends so booking is essential to secure seats.
I really dig the Curry Fish Rice served by Caulfield Chinese Restaurant. It is spicy, healthy as it has sliced fish and broccoli (if I remembered correctly), generous serving to fill a hungry stomach and cheap. The 牛腩饭 is also delicious and fulfilling. It's located opposite Caulfield train station. There is also a small homely Korean restaurant call Kimchi & Bob near Caulfield train station which is good too. Homely and authentic. But the Korean's English aren't too fluent so have slight problem with communicating.
Sushi sushi is a casual dining cum take away chain spread across most parts of Melbourne and is expending to other states. They even have one store in Changi Airport Terminal One! It's winning strategy is that they have chefs on site to make very tasty and fresh sushi rolls and sashimi packs on the spot. This and the fast turn around of patrons ensure that the food is fresh. If I'm not wrong, it's owned by Indonesians.
Shark Fin is a Cantonese restaurant group that also have yum cha during lunch time. I usually patronised the Kesyborough one as it's closer to where I live and much easier to find parking. The food is top notch and reasonable. My friend and I once had about 14 plates during a yum cha session and a few are big sized plates. It shows how good the food is and also the two of us were famished. hehehhe
There is a very large community of Vietnamese in Melbourne. The main Vietnamese suburbs are Springvale, Footscray, Richmond and St Albans. Needless to say most of the Vietnamese noodles in those areas are yummy and very affordable. Although usually I would have to drink plenty of water afterwards. lol
Reminsicing all these yummy food got me hungry liao, hahaha, so if you are travelling to Melbourne do give these a try if you have the chance 11月21日 Sick for a weekWas very sick for the whole of last week. Started with slight fever to high fever then later found out was caused by stomach flu as I had very bad diarrhoea for the last two days before I recovered. In total, went to see two different doctors for three times. One good thing that came out of this is I loss a bit of weight and paid back some sleep debt, lol Found someone that has translated the japanese words in here
It’s been a while since my last song post. Here's a very warm and sweet song that I came across recently. Been a long time away from Singapore and many Mandarin songs are new to me :)
Somehow prefer 动力火车's version. More powerful and a bit of a rock that I can sing to
